Albertina Sisulu Special School hosted the national World Read Aloud Day event on 2 February 2022, bringing the reading campaign into a school community in Orlando West.
The programme was organised with the Department of Basic Education, the Gauteng Department of Education, the National Reading Coalition and Nal’ibali. Organisers set a national target of signing up one million families and reading to three million children during the campaign.
Hosting the event at Albertina Sisulu Special School underscored that reading initiatives must include learners with different support needs. The celebration used shared stories to connect classrooms, families and education partners around the habit of reading aloud.
