South Africa's school-performance conversation may become broader than a single matric pass-rate figure. Inside Education reported that Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said the department's expanded approach would be applied from the 2026 National Senior Certificate results onwards.
The measures discussed at the National Education Excellence Awards include learner retention, Bachelor passes, distinctions and participation in key subjects. The report also says the approach will consider support for learners with disabilities, foundational learning, infrastructure and teacher support.
A broader dashboard could give families and education leaders more context about how schools are performing and where support is needed. It should be understood as a policy direction reported from the awards event, rather than a replacement for the official results that the department will publish.
