Giyani Primary receives three new classrooms during Mandela Month

A Mandela Day handover at Giyani Primary School in Soweto added three classrooms donated through a partnership with ABSA.

Giyani Primary School in Soweto was the site of a 2026 Mandela Day activation that included the handover of three newly built classrooms. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube officiated at the event, which was supported by ABSA.

The new rooms are intended to improve the school's learning environment and add practical capacity for the school community. The Department of Basic Education presented the handover as part of a wider call for partnerships that help address inequality and strengthen access to quality education.

The department also linked the event to learner wellbeing and school nutrition. Its national nutrition programme continues to support millions of learners, while community and private-sector partnerships are being used to improve the resources available to schools.
