Hoërskool Vryburger High School receives new bus donated by Vanguard

A new bus donated by Vanguard and Better Bedfordview will support academic excursions and sports travel while easing the school's transport costs.

The handover ceremony featured Vanguard director Bryan Hodgkinson and Better Bedfordview representatives Marina Constas and Frank and Carol Payne, who facilitated the donation. Hodgkinson explained that Vanguard’s support stems from its 53-year local presence and a desire to assist the community that supplies its staff, noting that private contributions are vital for schools.

Marina Constas characterised the institution as a beacon of optimism that successfully merges scholarly rigour with sporting excellence, while crediting the administration for cultivating a culture of mutual regard among students. School representative Bafana Moyo highlighted the financial strain on public schools, noting that annual state grant funding of around R240,000 is insufficient against monthly municipal rates exceeding R100,000.

Moyo stated that the school relies heavily on school fees and private donations due to constant shortfalls, as many learners require fee subsidies, and noted that the new bus has already saved the school thousands of rands. The donation also includes support for maintaining the school’s gardens, further assisting the institution's operational needs beyond transport alone.

Constas noted that the partnership began after she introduced Hodgkinson to the school, highlighting the need for support and the persistence of Carol Payne in helping. Moyo described the bus as an investment in learners' futures, enabling them to travel further and embrace opportunities that will shape their lives through improved access to events and matches.
