Johannesburg Hospital School for Autism dancers to perform at UJ Arts Centre

Learners from Johannesburg Hospital School for Autism will take the stage at the University of Johannesburg for the annual Enable through Dance performance.

The performance is part of the Enable through Dance project, which has operated for ten years to teach dance to learners with disabilities in Johannesburg schools. Johannesburg Hospital School for Autism is among the special needs schools and organisations participating in the weekly programme that reaches over 160 young people.

Dance and movement allow participants to express themselves creatively, challenging the limits others often place on them. The programme fosters community inclusion and validates disability experiences, helping learners regain confidence through artistic practice.

The programme concludes with participants performing in a professional theatre to a live audience, a step where school programmes rarely end for these learners. Artistic Director Sunnyboy Mandla Motau highlighted the importance of giving young people the chance to perform in a professional theatre and feel the excitement of a live production.

UJ Arts & Culture hosts the event as part of a long-standing partnership with Moving into Dance, supporting community-based artistic practice and social transformation. The free performance is scheduled for 11:00 on Thursday 18 September 2026 at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre on the UJ Kingsway Campus and runs for approximately 70 minutes.
