Laerskool Eben Swemmer in Gezina hosted a Department of Basic Education activation on 22 July as part of Social Cohesion Month and Nelson Mandela Month. The event brought together the department, community partners and school stakeholders.
The programme focused on the role schools can play as inclusive centres that protect learners and strengthen social connection. The department identified issues such as racism, discrimination, xenophobia, bullying and gender-based violence as barriers that schools and communities must work together to address.
The activation also connected school support with broader learner wellbeing, including mental health, nutrition and access to coordinated social services. Its central message was that respect for diversity and equal dignity are practical parts of everyday school life, not only themes for commemorative events.
