The Vertec Dragons, who won the inaugural title with a 41-run victory over the Gryphons, are led by Lebohang Pita Miekie van Voorst, whose 133 not out in the final earned her CSA’s U19 Women’s T20 Player of the Year award. The league’s player pool has broadened beyond Ekurhuleni to include talent from Titans, North West, Mpumalanga and KZN Tuskers, significantly raising the competitive standard.
Notable drafted players include Benoni Northerns Women’s Player of the Year Marichelle Lubbe, youth international Ashleigh van Wyk, Tersia Owens, and Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen all-rounder Bruzaan Goosen. To promote fresh talent, teams were restricted to retaining only 50% of their previous season’s squads, enabling new players to join the competition.
Two floodlit matches will be played during the tournament, offering players their first experience of night cricket under professional conditions. Every match of the tournament will be broadcast live thanks to sponsorship from 360 Next Gen, increasing visibility for female cricketers and growing the profile of women’s cricket.
Tournament convenor Shannon McKelvey stated that Fire and Fury aims to provide women’s cricket with the same atmosphere and opportunities traditionally afforded to men’s cricket. Feedback from last year’s tournament indicated that players’ performances improved significantly after competing against stronger opposition, reinforcing the league’s developmental impact.
