An exposed electrical cable caught fire at Mayibuye High School on 27 July, prompting the school to release learners early while staff and pupils moved away from the danger.
The incident happened on the school’s first day back after parents, school governing body members and community leaders had suspended a protest over conditions at the school. Local reporting said the cable was seen burning and that learners and staff were moved away as a precaution.
The incident followed wider complaints about broken toilets, damaged ceilings, an incomplete extension area, an overgrown site and other infrastructure problems. Parents and community representatives had earlier halted teaching and learning, saying the conditions were unsafe and demanding urgent intervention.
The Gauteng Department of Education told the local publication that it was reviewing the matter and would provide an update. MySchool is presenting the reported allegations as allegations while the department’s response remains pending.
