South Africa marked World Read Aloud Day 2026 with a new inclusion milestone: the featured story was produced in South African Sign Language and translated into the country’s other 11 official languages. The national flagship event was hosted at Megoring Primary School in Limpopo.
Reading aloud builds vocabulary, comprehension and a culture of shared storytelling. Making the campaign available in sign language also recognises Deaf learners as participants in national literacy life rather than an audience added at the edge.
A single celebration cannot solve the shortage of accessible books or specialist support. It can, however, set a useful standard: literacy materials should be designed from the start for different languages, communication needs and ways of experiencing a story.
