Four Western Cape school athletes competed in Celle, Italy, on 16 July as part of the inaugural World Wide Scholarship and Western Cape Schools Europe Tour, the provincial education department reported on 24 July.
Lamicah Adamson of La Rochelle Girls’ High School won the girls’ under-15 80-metre event in 10.09 seconds. Aneeq Salie of Stellenberg High School and Aushwin-Leigh Jantjies of Barrydale High School both finished among the top 20 competitors in the boys’ under-19 400 metres.
Miché van Staden of Curro Durbanville placed in the top 10 in the girls’ under-19 100-metre and 200-metre events. The department said the athletes also received guidance from Olympic and world-championship medallist Luvo Manyonga, while organisers are considering whether to expand the tour into an annual opportunity.
